Migrating from Outlook Express (OE) to Windows Live Mail (WLM) is a common step when moving from Windows XP to newer Windows versions. Because these email clients use different storage formats, a direct copy-and-paste of files will not work.

This guide provides a safe, step-by-step walkthrough to transfer your emails, folders, and address book without losing any data. Step 1: Locate and Copy Your Outlook Express Data

Before doing anything on your new computer, you must find and back up your Outlook Express store folder from the old machine. Open Outlook Express. Click Tools > Options > Maintenance tab. Click the Store Folder button to see the exact file path.

Copy this path, open Windows Explorer, and paste it into the address bar.

Copy all the .dbx files from this folder to an external USB drive. Step 2: Export Your Outlook Express Address Book

To move your contacts, you need to export them into a universal format. In Outlook Express, click File > Export > Address Book. Select Text File (Comma Separated Values) and click Export.

Name the file (e.g., contacts.csv) and save it to your USB drive.

Check the boxes for the fields you want to keep (Name, Email, etc.) and click Finish. Step 3: Import Emails into Windows Live Mail

Now, move to your new computer where Windows Live Mail is installed. Plug in your USB drive. Open Windows Live Mail.

Click the File menu (or the top-left menu icon) and select Import messages.

Choose Microsoft Outlook Express 6 from the list and click Next.

Click Browse and select the folder on your USB drive containing your copied .dbx files.

Click Next, choose All Folders, and click Next again to start the import.

Click Finish. Your emails will appear in a folder named Imported Folder under your Storage Folders. Step 4: Import Contacts into Windows Live Mail

The final step is bringing your address book into the new application.

Click the Contacts icon in the bottom-left corner of Windows Live Mail.

Click the Import button on the top ribbon and select Comma Separated Values (.CSV).

Click Browse, locate the contacts.csv file on your USB drive, and click Next.

Map the text fields if prompted (ensuring “Name” matches “Name” and “Email” matches “Email Address”). Click Finish to complete the transfer. Troubleshooting Tips

Missing Folders: If some folders do not appear after importing, ensure you copied all .dbx files from the old machine, including Folders.dbx, which holds the directory structure.

Large Mailboxes: If you have gigabytes of emails, the import process might look like it has frozen. Leave the computer alone and let it finish processing.

To make sure this guide fits your exact setup, could you tell me: What version of Windows is your new computer running?

Are you moving everything via a USB drive, or are the computers on the same network?

I can update the steps to make your migration even smoother.
